Buy a Scania truck or tractor unit

Scania mainly divides the truck series into cabin families L, P, G, R and S. The letters say a lot about the cabin position and space, but not yet which engine, axles, drive or structure the vehicle has.

For proper comparison, cab, engine designation and chassis configuration must be read separately. An R-series tractor unit and R-series crane truck can differ greatly from each other technically and practically.

L, P, G, R and S series

The low L-cab is aimed at urban applications with frequent entry and exit. P and G can be widely used for distribution, construction and regional transport. R and the more spacious S cab are common in heavy and international transport.

XT is not a separate cabin family but a version for heavier working conditions. Therefore, always check which cabin and which chassis are included in the XT equipment.

Generation, engine power and V8

On the used market, a distinction is often made between the earlier PGR generation and the New Truck Generation. Year of manufacture, cabin interior and type data help determine which generation it actually concerns.

Designations such as R450 or S500 combine cabin family and power class. V8 refers to the engine family and not to an individual vehicle model. Check engine code, emission class and transmission in the vehicle data.

Scania buses and chassis

Scania is also offered as a bus and as a chassis with body from another manufacturer. For such a vehicle, Scania chassis data such as body builder, length, doors, seats and use as a city, regular or coach are relevant.

What should you check when buying a used Scania?

  • Cab family, generation and full type designation.
  • tractor unit or chassis, wheelbase and axle configuration.
  • Engine code, power, transmission, retarder and emission class.
  • Cabin height, sleeping equipment and tanks for long-distance work.
  • PTO, hydraulics, suspension and condition of the superstructure.
  • Maintenance history, mileage and demonstrable repairs.
