Buying a truck: what should you pay attention to?

The right truck depends on the work it needs to perform. Distribution, construction transport, container logistics, and heavy haulage place different demands on the chassis, body, payload capacity, driveline, and cab.

Therefore, do not just compare brand, year of manufacture, and engine power. The axle configuration, wheelbase, gross weight ratings, body dimensions, and loading or unloading equipment ultimately determine whether a truck is practical and cost-effective to operate.

Start with cargo and bodywork

First, determine what the vehicle needs to transport and how loading and unloading will take place. A distribution truck requires different characteristics than a tipper, crane truck, refrigerated truck, or container transporter. Pay attention to interior dimensions, loading aperture, floor load capacity, loading height, and the space the body requires on the chassis.

For interchangeable or moving bodies, also check the required hydraulics, power take-off (PTO), controls, and chassis reinforcement. The weight of a tailgate loader, crane, hooklift, or refrigeration unit reduces the net payload capacity of the complete vehicle.

Axle configuration and driveline

A 4x2 truck is relatively light and agile, making it suitable for many distribution operations. A 6x2 provides an extra axle for weight distribution; check whether this is a tag axle or pusher axle, and whether it is steered or liftable. A 6x4 or 8x4 has more driven axles and is more commonly deployed where traction, stability, or a heavy body is important.

More axles and drivelines do not automatically increase usable payload capacity. They also add tare weight, tires, and maintenance. Therefore, compare the permissible total and axle loads with the actual kerb weight of the vehicle including the body.

Wheelbase, weight distribution, and payload

The wheelbase must match the length and center of gravity of the body. A short wheelbase is agile but offers less mounting space. A long wheelbase can accommodate a larger body, but increases the turning radius and may limit deployment in tight locations.

Do not look at total payload capacity alone. The cargo must be distributed in such a way that no individual axle is overloaded. Tanks, batteries, toolboxes, tailgates, and cranes therefore impact not only the total weight, but also the load on the front and rear axles.

Engine, cab, and daily operation

Required engine power depends on gross weight, route, and desired speed. For urban distribution, all-round visibility, ease of entry, turning radius, and a suitable transmission are often more important than maximum power. For heavy-duty or hilly work, torque, gear ratios, and braking capacity carry more weight.

A day cab keeps the vehicle compact and often leaves more space for the body. For multi-day trips, a bed, storage space, headroom, auxiliary heating, and climate control are relevant. Also check the surrounding visibility and available driver assistance systems for the environment in which the truck will be operated.

Inspecting a used truck

Verify whether the mileage, operating hours, and maintenance history match the previous application. Inspect the chassis, tires, brakes, air suspension, driveline, and emission system, and watch out for leaks, corrosion, cracks, and previous repairs.

Also test the complete bodywork. Open doors and flaps, test a tailgate loader or crane according to the applicable procedure, and check the hydraulics, remote control, and safety features. For specialist bodies, maintenance and inspection records can be at least as important as the vehicle documentation.

Comparing new and used trucks

On TruckTrader you can compare trucks by brand, model, year of manufacture, mileage, body type, axle configuration, power output, and emission class. Contact the seller directly for missing dimensions, weights, maintenance information, and body documentation.

For example, view DAF truck, Volvo truck, Scania truck, Mercedes-Benz truck and MAN truck and then select the bodywork that suits your operations.
