A 4x2 tractor unit generally has a lower unladen weight, fewer tyres and lower operating costs, making it well suited to regular road transport. A 6x2 distributes the load over three axles and can be better suited to heavy trailers or specific axle-load requirements, but the extra axle also adds unladen weight. Check whether it has a pusher or tag axle and whether that axle is steerable or liftable.

Look at the usual train weight, the terrain and the desired cruising speed. For tough or hilly routes, torque and appropriate transmissions are at least as important as maximum power.

For day trips, a compact cabin is often sufficient. In international or multi-day transport, bed quality, headroom, storage space, heating and cooling count heavily.

The fifth wheel height must match the trailer and provide sufficient free space. Wheelbase and position of the fifth wheel influence axle loads, turning circle and the space between cabin and trailer.

View maintenance, mileage, clutch or transmission, fifth wheel, tires, brakes and emissions system. Also check for chassis repairs, air leaks and error messages under load.
