Buying a Scania R580 V8 tractor unit
The Scania R580 V8 combines the R cab with a 580 hp V8 engine. Used examples are commonly offered for international and heavy transport, but chassis and equipment differences determine the work for which an individual truck is suitable.
Compare specification and intended use
Start with the axle configuration. A 4x2 is generally lighter and suited to regular road transport. A 6x2 offers more options for axle-load distribution, while a 6x4 can be relevant for heavy work or when additional traction is required.
Also check cab specification, wheelbase, fifth-wheel height, fuel capacity, air or leaf suspension and whether the truck has a retarder, PTO or hydraulics. The R580 V8 designation alone does not confirm this equipment.
What should you check on a used Scania R580 V8?
- Service history, mileage and documented engine or transmission repairs.
- Emission standard and access to the countries and low-emission zones in which the truck will operate.
- Axle configuration, suspension, tyres, brakes and permitted weights.
- Cab height, sleeping equipment, parking heater, air conditioning and driver equipment.
- Retarder, hydraulics, PTO and other equipment required for the intended trailer.
