Buying a drawbar trailer: what should you check?
A drawbar trailer must suit the load, towing vehicle and daily loading method. Body type, permitted mass, unladen weight, dimensions and coupling together determine whether a trailer is practical and safe to operate.
Do not compare brand and price alone. Check payload, the towing and nose-weight limits of the towing vehicle, axle count, braking system and the driving-licence requirements in the country where the combination will be used.
Match the body to the load
Flatbed and open trailers are flexible for building materials and machinery. Box trailers protect tools and goods, tippers speed up unloading loose material, while machine, car, motorcycle and boat trailers are designed around a specific load.
For specialist trailers, check loading angle, ramps, winch, floor capacity, lashing points and load distribution over the axles. External dimensions alone do not describe the usable loading area.
Weights, coupling and towing vehicle
Calculate usable payload from the permitted mass minus the actual unladen weight including fitted options. A spare wheel, cover, winch, support legs and hydraulics all reduce the capacity left for cargo.
Compare the towing and nose-weight limits of the towing vehicle with the loaded trailer. Coupling height, electrical connector, braking equipment and any stability systems must also be compatible.
Inspecting a used trailer
Inspect the chassis, drawbar and welds for corrosion, cracks, distortion and previous repairs. Check tyres, bearings, brakes, lights and coupling, then test doors, ramps, tipping gear and winches throughout their full movement.
Match the chassis number, identification plate and documents. Before buying, verify the registration, inspection and licence requirements that apply in the country of use.
