Buy a Volvo truck or bus
Volvo has truck series for long distance, heavy transport, distribution and construction, but the same brand page also includes buses and different generations. Therefore, first select the application and then compare the cabin, chassis and drivetrain.
The model letters are just the beginning. FH, FM and FMX are available in many axle, cab and body variants, while FE and FL are mainly found in lighter and medium-duty applications.
FH, FH16, FM, FMX, FE and FL
FH and FH Aero are focused on long-distance transport; FH16 on the toughest applications. The versatile FM is used for regional transport and various constructions, while FMX has been developed for construction and heavy duty environments. FE and FL are more compact for distribution, municipal work and urban deployment.
Check the cabin height, engine, axles and wheelbase within each series. A Volvo FM can, for example, be designed as a tractor unit, tanker, garbage truck or crane truck.
Volvo generations and powertrains
Traders sometimes use informal generation designations for the FH and FM. Always place this next to year of manufacture, chassis number and cabin data, because registration date and model change are not the same in every market.
Volvo supplies diesel, gas and electric variants. For gas, check the tank configuration and available infrastructure, and for electric, check the battery configuration, charging options and route under actual load.
Volvo buses
Used bus offerings include city, regional and coach series, such as 7900, 8900, 9700 and 9900. Some vehicles are built on a Volvo chassis with a different body builder.
Therefore, in addition to model and year of manufacture, also check chassis, bodywork, length, door layout, floor height, number of seats and luggage space.
What should you check when buying a used Volvo?
- Truck or bus series, generation and complete type data.
- Cabin, wheelbase, axle configuration and permitted mass.
- Engine, I-Shift version, retarder and emission class.
- Mileage, maintenance history and demonstrable repairs.
- PTO, hydraulics, suspension and suitability of the superstructure.
- For alternatively powered vehicles: energy storage, infrastructure and deployment profile.
