Buying a tractor unit: what should you pay attention to?
A tractor unit must match the trailer, the gross train weight and the type of journeys. In addition to power and brand, pay particular attention to axle configuration, fifth wheel height, cabin and maintenance history.

Do I choose a 4x2 or 6x2 tractor unit?
A 4x2 is often lighter and efficient for regular road transport. A 6x2 can provide more load capacity and stability; check whether the extra axle is steerable or liftable and suits your needs.
How do I determine the correct engine power?
Look at the usual train weight, the terrain and the desired cruising speed. For tough or hilly routes, torque and appropriate transmissions are at least as important as maximum power.
Which cabin suits my rides?
For day trips, a compact cabin is often sufficient. In international or multi-day transport, bed quality, headroom, storage space, heating and cooling count heavily.
Why are fifth-wheel height and wheelbase important?
The fifth wheel height must match the trailer and provide sufficient free space. Wheelbase and position of the fifth wheel influence axle loads, turning circle and the space between cabin and trailer.
What do I check on a used tractor unit?
View maintenance, mileage, clutch or transmission, fifth wheel, tires, brakes and emissions system. Also check for chassis repairs, air leaks and error messages under load.
